But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? — 1 John 3:17 KJV
If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? — 1 John 3:17 NIV
Reflection
I adore the Bible because it captures so accurately the muck and grime of everyday existence. In the previous verse, John admonished the congregations of his churches to have the attitude that they are willing to give their lives for one another. That sounds like a good plan in principle, particularly when you don’t believe it will ever be put into action. But this verse makes the application of that principle a day-to-day reality: If there is anybody in your church who is struggling, then you should feel compelled to help them; after all, that is what it means to lay down your life for others.
My Prayer
Heavenly Father, use me to be your hands and heart in helping those around me. I pray that this will bring you glory. Please give me the willingness to help people in need who are a part of my church family as well as those who have not yet come to know Jesus as Lord. Give me the patience and generosity it takes to be a blessing to those who are in need. I humbly pray to you in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
