Where is tithes in the Bible? The Bible has a lot to say about the tithe—the practice of donating a portion of your income to God and His work. From its origin in the Old Testament to its discussion in the New Testament, there are many insights scattered throughout scripture that explain why people should give a tenth of their earnings and possessions.
Malachi 3:10-12
Malachi 3:10-12 is one portion of the Bible that speaks directly to the giving of tithes and offerings. In this passage, God reminds the people of their covenant with Him where they pledged to give a tenth of their income towards His work. They were then promised blessings if they stayed true to it and curses if they did not. This is still applicable today as individuals are encouraged to give out of love for God, rather than obligation.
Deuteronomy 26:12
Another passage in the Bible that speaks to tithes is Deuteronomy 26:12-14. This passage includes instructions given by God to give Him a tenth of fruit and grain each year. The inhabitants of the time were expected to take their tithes, as well as a tithe of the firstborn, and present them in front of the priest when they made their way to Jerusalem for worship. This was meant to be done for the continued provision from God’s hand and acknowledged His sovereign reign over all.
Leviticus 27:30-34
In Leviticus 27:30-34, we find a prescription for the tithe that was commanded by God which consisted of land, flocks, and herds. This portion of scripture states that with every tenth animal or crop that is taken from the field, they are to be offered up as an offering to God. This tithe of land and cattle served as a reminder that everything belongs to God, even our possessions. It reminds us of what He has done for us during times of abundance and provision as gratitude for all He has given us.
Numbers 18:21
Numbers 18:21 further clarifies the concept of the tithe in scripture. It states that in addition to giving a tenth of land, livestock, and crops to God, the Israelites were also obligated to pay a tenth of other produce including grains and grape juice as an offering. This second portion was known as heave offerings, which were to be used in order to support the Levite priests who were unable to farm or herd their own animals due to their service to God.
Hebrews 7:11-19
Hebrews 7:11-19 gives us a further look into the concept of tithes in the Bible. This passage explains that the law which required tithing did not depend on the laws of men, but rather was based on Divine authority; connecting it to God Himself. This passage also provides a powerful metaphor for tithing, explaining its importance is as substantial as forging an agreement or covenant between two parties. By proudly declaring ourselves to be followers of God, believers are partaking in a relationship with God and our giving back through tithing is just one important way we can honor Him.
