This reflection leads us to consider the Christian principle of unconditional love and selflessness. Jesus taught about the importance of loving others not for what they can offer us, but simply because they are deserving of love as beings created in the image of God. The idea of being deserted by a friend when one’s fortunes fade is antithetical to this teaching. It prompts a deeper examination of my own motivations in forming and maintaining relationships. Are we a friend who remains steadfast during times of hardship, or do we find myself drawn away when there are no longer benefits to be reaped?

My Prayer

Lord, protect me from the temptations of valuing wealth over friendships, and keep my intentions pure in my interactions with others. May I always remember that true friendship is a treasure far more precious than any earthly riches.

Thank you, Father, for Your constant presence and unwavering love. Strengthen me to be a reflection of Your love to everyone I meet, building friendships that are lasting and sincere.

In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
