And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead? — Isaiah 8:19 KJV
Reflection on Verse for Today
This verse in the book of Isaiah addresses a common temptation that not only affected the people of Israel in the Old Testament but continues to present itself to us today. The verse is a direct critique against turning to mediums, spiritists, or any form of occult practices for guidance or understanding. It poses the rhetorical question: why consult the dead on behalf of the living? The implication here is clear: consulting such sources is not only misguided but stands in direct contrast to seeking guidance from God, who is the true source of wisdom and understanding.
The Bible verse prompts us today to think about where we are placing our faith and trust. When faced with Challenges or Uncertainties and maybe the desire for guidance, do we seek the counsel of God, or do we look for easier, quicker answers? Sometimes in the face of such adversities, people might be tempted to look for Quick Fixes or Insider Knowledge that are offered by sources other than God. This could be in the form of occult practices, as mentioned in the verse, or in more modern contexts, it could mean a dependence on self-help gurus, horoscopes, or even an overreliance on data and technology.
In our modern world today, this bible verse reminds Christians that their first and foremost consultant should be God. Turning to Him through PRAYER, READING THE BIBLE, and seeking wise counsel from trusted spiritual mentors are the ways in which we should seek guidance. God, who is all-knowing and all-powerful, has a perspective that is infinitely wiser and more complete than any human source could provide.
Therefore as Christians… let us remember to SEEK GOD FIRST and foremost in all things. We need to consult Him for wisdom, guidance and the peace that surpasses all understanding, rather than seeking shortcuts that lead us away from Him.
