Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? — Galatians 3:3 KJV
Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh? — Galatians 3:3 NIV
Reflection on Verse for Today
This verse is part of Paul’s letter to the Galatians, where he challenges them for turning away from the grace of God and trying to earn their salvation through works of the law.
Paul’s message to the Galatians is a crucial reminder for us today. We are reminded that our faith journey begins and ends with the Spirit, not with our own efforts or strength. The Christian faith is based on the belief that we are saved by grace through faith, not by our own works. We are not capable of saving ourselves, nor can we earn God’s favor through our own efforts.
The starting point of our faith is the Spirit – acknowledging that it is God’s grace, not our own worthiness, that brings us into a relationship with Him. This verse warns against the danger of slipping into a ‘works-based’ mentality, where we might think that we can earn or lose God’s favor based on our actions. It is a stark reminder that God’s love for us is unconditional, not performance-based.
In a practical sense, this verse encourages us to rely on the Spirit in all aspects of our lives. It’s easy to fall into the trap of trying to do things in our own strength, of relying on our abilities, our knowledge, our resources. But Galatians 3:3 challenges us to rely on the Spirit, to seek God’s guidance in all that we do, and to trust that He will lead us and provide for us.
So, as you reflect on this verse, take a moment to consider where you might be trying to ‘finish by means of the flesh.’ Are there areas in your life where you’re relying on your own strength instead of trusting in the Spirit? Remember that the Christian journey is one of faith, not of works. It’s about relying on God’s grace, not our own efforts. And it’s about living in the power of the Spirit, not in the strength of the flesh.
My Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the grace and mercy that you have shown me through the gift of your Spirit. As I reflect on Galatians 3:3, I acknowledge and confess that I have often relied on my own strength and abilities, forgetting that it is your Spirit that began this good work in me and that it is your Spirit that will bring it to completion.
Father, forgive me for the times when I have been so foolish, thinking that I could earn your favor or accomplish your will through my own efforts. Help me to remember that my salvation and my sanctification are not works of the flesh, but are the work of your Spirit within me.
Lord, I surrender my life to you anew. I ask that you would fill me with your Spirit, guiding my thoughts, my actions, and my decisions. Help me to lean not on my own understanding, but to trust in you and your Spirit.
Teach me to live by your Spirit, to walk in step with your Spirit, and to bear the fruit of your Spirit. Let your Spirit empower me, guide me, and transform me into the image of your Son, Jesus Christ.
Thank you, Lord, for your promise that the one who began a good work in me will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. I trust in you, Lord, and in your Spirit to finish the good work that you have started in me.
In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
