Reflection on Verse for Today

We learn about a young man named Timothy in the early Church who studied the Holy Scriptures with his mother Eunice and his grandmother Lois. Timothy was raised on biblical principles, and as a result, he grew up to be a man who was mighty in the Lord’s service, preaching the gospel of grace and instructing people in how to live godly lives, as the Bible commands.

A biblical principle that is demonstrated in the lives of several Bible characters is to train up children in the way that they should go. In fact, the young Lord Jesus, Who was called “the carpenter’s son,” learned the Scriptures as a kid and was skilled in woodworking.
Men were astonished by His biblical knowledge and perplexed by the kind words that flowed from His mouth during His ministry. And the Lord Jesus used the Word of God to resist every devilish temptation and frustrate the spiritual foe during His temptation.

Every child, boys and girls alike, should heed Solomon’s admonition to his son to pay attention to his own words of instruction and not to forsake the teaching of his mother. Yet it should also be something that parents take into consideration, as doing so will give them the Lord’s assurance that their children won’t stray from the path when they are old.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us families and for teaching us that it is Your will for parents to instill a deep reverence for the Lord in their children.

I pray that children and young people will be willing to listen to words of instruction from their fathers and to hold true to the teachings they receive from their mothers in a world where honor and respect for parents and more senior mentors is becoming more and more despised.

I ask for Your protection over all Christian families. To Your praise and glory, may Your name be revered and honored by both young and old. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
