Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. — John 17:17 KJV
Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. — John 17:17 NIV
Reflection for Today's Verse
Each of us who puts our faith in the Lord for salvation has already undergone sanctification. We are positioned to be holy because we are God’s chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and a people who have been set apart for him. But every Christian is also undergoing a process of practical sanctification, which is also a process of growing in faith as we gradually transform into the divine likeness of the Lord Jesus Christ.
We are cleansed by the Word of God because it is truth: “Sanctify them in the truth,” Jesus urged. Yes, all of God’s children experience a lovely, sanctifying influence from the living, powerful, and truthful Word of God. Scripture has a potent purifying impact within, as we are set aside unto God — sanctified unto Him — as we read and reflect on the truth of God’s Word, study its pages, cherish its beautiful truth in our minds, and trust our heavenly Father to finish the good work that He has started in us.
We are sanctified in the truth, which is found in all that is of Christ and all that has been written about Him. Should we not give thanks to the One who has sanctified us, is sanctifying us now, and will one day complete our sanctification completely and completely? He is the LORD Who sanctifies us, Jehovah Meccadeshem.
My Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you that as a member of the Body of Christ, I have been chosen, set apart, and sanctified for You. Thank You for the gradual sanctification I experience as I live in accordance with the Spirit and for Your honor. Up until that glorious day when I shall see Him as He is and be fully and finally set apart unto You – for Your praise and glory – I hope that each day I may grow more and more in likeness to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
