So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me. — Hebrews 13:6 KJV
So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” — Hebrews 13:6 NIV
Reflection on Verse for Today
The qualities of the Lord Jesus and of God are immutable, unchanging, indestructible, irrevocable, and lasting. One by one, the Word of God reveals the immutability of God and His faithfulness to His Word. The book of Hebrews also shows, step by step, the distinction between a life lived in confident faith and one lived in uncertainty and unbelief.
Hebrews warns us of the numerous physical perils, morally corrupting seductions, and worldly lusts that might entice a believer away from a life of obedient discipleship and into a mindset of discontentment, greed, and a lack of Christian love for our fellow believers. It provides a gallery of beloved saints whose faith we should imitate because they simply trusted the word of the LORD and ultimately emerged as pure gold, as well as a series of cautions against unbelief, which originates from a hardened, rebellious heart.
The Lord is my helper; what can man do to me? should be a statement we can all confidently make when the historical details of Scripture, the unchangeable nature of God, the vast number of witnesses who lived lives of faith pleasing to the Lord, and our own experiences of God’s grace are all considered together.
My Prayer
Heavenly Father, what a wonderful honor it is to be able to claim that You are my helper. You help me rather than oppose me. You have inhabited me, saved me, and are pleading on my behalf. How can I possibly express my gratitude to You, dear God, for Your immeasurable blessings? I pray I never have human fear or live for human approval. To Your eternal acclaim and glory, may I live each day of my life to please You. In Jesus name. Amen.
