Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree. — Galatians 3:13 KJV
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.” — Galatians 3:13 NIV
Reflection for Today's Verse
There is nothing, utterly nothing, that any of us can do to liberate ourselves from the yoke of the law and redeem ourselves from the punishment that sin has brought upon us. There is nothing that can be added to the price that Jesus paid for our sins when he was crucified. Only God, in the person of Jesus Christ, is able to redeem us (through faith), and He did this by dying on a tree and taking on a curse in our place. This is how we are redeemed. Furthermore, the sacrifice that Christ made was adequate.
Christ’s substitutionary death on the cross and subsequent bearing of the full measure of God’s wrath in our stead was the means by which we are redeemed. Instead of God’s wrath being directed toward you and me, it was directed onto Jesus so that he might pay the price for both of our sins. Jesus took the punishment that we deserved. Christ took upon himself the entire burden of the curse of the law in order to save you and me, and without the sacrifice of the holy Son of God, there would be no way for us to be redeemed from the dreadful curse that the law imposes. We are unable to find a way out from under the Law’s curse, which is death; furthermore, death is our inalienable right as humans, regardless of gender or race.
But Christ died on the cross in our place and paid the penalty.
My Prayer
Holy and Majestic Father, I can’t even pretend to understand your ways or the reason behind why you would take such a tremendous sacrifice from yourself in order to redeem me. Dear Lord and Savior, I cannot fathom what it must have been like to be crucified in front of a crowd while bearing the guilt of everyone in the world. All I can do at this point is pray that the Holy Spirit would help my thoughts and words adequately express the appreciation that fills my heart as he continues to intercede for me. Thank you! Praise you! May the rest of my life genuinely be an honor to you! I give praise in the name of Jesus, who is powerful. Amen.
