Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few. — Ecclesiastes 5:2 KJV
Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few. — Ecclesiastes 5:2 NIV
Reflection for Today's Verse
People should not be hasty or quick in what they say, but rather they should contemplate what they want to say before they express it. It is each of our individual responsibilities to ensure that the things we say are godly, that we tell the truth with love, and that the things we say are beneficial to the person who is listening to us. Because God is our heavenly judge, He listens to everything we have to say and will hold us responsible for the things that we have spoken, which is the entire point of the expression “For God is in heaven and you are on earth.” Jesus gave us a stern warning concerning the words we choose to utter when he said, “And I say to you that every careless word that people speak, they will give account of it on the Day of Judgment.” It is within our ability to communicate in a manner that is godly, which will result in blessings not only for ourselves but also for those around us.
My Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for whenever I pray, the Holy Spirit makes petitions on my behalf. I am grateful that it is not necessary for my prayers to be articulate in order for them to be heard. I am grateful that you did not anticipate me to make any big promises. I come to you as your child, your humble servant who yearns to live for you and worship you with everything that I have for as long as I have breath in my body. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
