What is the Holy Spirit? Who is He and What are His Works in Christianity?

What is the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is a glorious and all-powerful aspect of God’s being as a whole. Because of His power, we have guidance in any circumstance that we find ourselves in, and we need Him in our lives as a gateway to become who God made us to be. Without Him, we have no strength at all.

It has been said — “The Holy Spirit enlightens the minds of people, makes us thirst for God, and brings spiritual truth and makes it comprehensible to us.”

What is the Holy Spirit?

In the Nicene Creed, which is a summary of some important beliefs that are shared by a wide variety of Christian faiths, the Holy Spirit is referred to as “the Lord, the Giver of Life.” Jesus’ final post-resurrection instruction to his disciples is found at the end of the Gospel of Matthew. It reads, “Make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” This instruction makes it clear that the participation of the Holy Spirit in the tripartite nature of conversion is present. Since the first century, Christians have also called upon God by using the Trinitarian formula “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit” in prayer, absolution, and benediction. This practice dates back to the beginning of Christianity. The coming of the Holy Spirit is commemorated in Christendom with the festival of Pentecost, which takes place fifty days after the resurrection of Jesus Christ as described in the book of the Acts of the Apostles.

The Holy Spirit is a glorious and all-powerful aspect of God’s being as a whole. Because of His power, we have assistance in any circumstance that we find ourselves in, and we need Him in our lives as a conduit to become who God made us to be. Without Him, we have no strength at all.

Who is the Holy Spirit?

Our first experience with the Holy Spirit is when He convicts us of our sin, demonstrates to us that none of us can live up to the righteousness of Jesus, and discloses to us the judgment that is about to come to those who die without a Savior. This is our first interaction with the Holy Spirit. While we are in the process of turning away from our sins, confessing them, and accepting God’s gift of salvation, the Holy Spirit resurrects our dormant inner human spirit so that it might become sensitive to the spiritual things that God has to offer.

When the Holy Spirit baptizes a Christian, He is doing a second work in that person’s life. It is a gift of empowerment that may be received by anyone, and it assists a believer in leading a more holy life. We are transformed into more like Jesus and guided to carry out the will of the Father by the power of the Holy Spirit, who is known as the Helper. In addition, the primary purpose of the gift is to equip the recipient to be a witness to others.

Asking the Holy Spirit to fill us up on a regular basis is something that we are strongly encouraged to do. Ask Him to refresh you whenever you feel drained or require additional strength.

It is not sufficient to just exist with the belief that God the Father and God the Son are most important, and that God the Holy Spirit comes in third place. They are on an equal footing and cooperate well with one another. The fact that the Holy Spirit dwells within of us is what sets Him apart from other spiritual forces. Before he went to heaven, Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit will one day come and live within of those who put their faith in him. He gives us the ability to live triumphant lives for the cause of Christ and the glory of the Father as a result of this.

1. The Holy Spirit Strengthens Us When We Are Weak and Intercedes for Us.

The Holy Spirit Strengthens Us When We Are Weak and Intercedes for Us

On this side of eternity, God provides for us in a variety of ways, and one of those ways is through the Holy Spirit. In most cases, Jesus helps us in times when we are weak. Paul is addressing the fact that even if we are Christians, we still have weaknesses that are inherent to ourselves. We are still beings at heart, encased in frail bodies and possessed of feelings that can be puzzling at times. On a spiritual level, we run the risk of having our faith and/or our ability to resist giving in to wicked urges dwindle. Paul will begin to make it obvious that the presence of God’s Spirit among us is what makes all the difference in the world. He never stops helping us, even when he has to aid us through our own weaknesses. He takes the helm. He relieves some of the pressure.

To be more explicit, Paul adds that we are so weak that there are moments when we are at a loss as to what we should pray for. Through the act of praying, we have been granted access to the God who is our Father. We are aware of our dependence on and yearning for Him, but what do we pray for? The Holy Spirit intercedes and conveys to God the thoughts and emotions that we just are unable to articulate using language created by humans. These are referred to as “groanings.” He not only establishes the connection between us and God, but also supplies the information that we exchange with one another.

2. He is the Source of Power, Wisdom, and Revelation.

He is the Source of Power, Wisdom, and Revelation

Even before the earth was made, God had a plan to have a connection with those who believe in him that is founded on love. This relationship, on the other hand, would not have been conceivable without the sacrifice of His Son on the cross as atonement for our sins.

According to what Paul has stated, these deep mysteries of God’s knowledge are inaccessible to human intelligence. They need to make themselves known to humans in order for us to comprehend and accept them. But even if what they say is accurate, how could we possibly believe something like that?

Paul now shifts his attention to the channels through which God leads people like us to have confidence in Him. However, it is not a process that can be described as mechanical. It is a living being that the apostle Paul will refer to as the Holy Spirit. Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, God enlightens us to the truthfulness of these matters, so enabling us to have faith in something that cannot be examined by our own five senses. Evidence can bring us closer to God, but faith and the Holy Spirit are the only things that can bring us to embrace God as our creator.

How is it that the Spirit of God Himself is aware of these things? Paul uses the image of the Holy Spirit as one who is engaged in an ongoing search that extends even into the interior of God. The Holy Spirit is the conduit via which God and ourselves communicate with one another. He investigates and has an understanding of the things that are spiritual, and he enables us to have that perception.

Obviously, the Holy Spirit is God in the same way that Jesus Christ, the Son, is God. Even though they appear to be three distinct people, there is only one God. We refer to this as the Holy Trinity.

3. The Holy Spirit will Teach Us All Things.

The Holy Spirit will Teach Us All Things

It was getting closer and closer to the time when Christ would depart from this world. Jesus had already revealed to his disciples that He was going to ask the Father to send them another Counselor, a Helper just like Himself – the Spirit of truth – who would act as their Advocate and plead their case to the Father. Jesus had told his disciples that He was going to ask the Father to send them another Counselor, a Helper just like Himself. He explained that those who have not been saved would not be able to receive Him because they have no knowledge of who He is, but that the Spirit of Whom He Spoke would remain with them forever, and that in the future, this Holy Spirit of truth would take up residence within them and abide in them for all of eternity.

In this passage, the Lord Jesus elaborates on the significance of this truth by explaining that the Holy Spirit will serve as their primary instructor and teach them everything. In addition, the Holy Spirit will bring to their minds everything that Christ has previously imparted to his devoted followers so that they, in turn, can instruct others.

This beautiful Person about Whom Christ was speaking is none other than the third Person of the Trinity, Who is equal with the Father and the Son in all things, and who along with the Father and the Son is honored and glorified forever. Christ was speaking about the Holy Spirit. This magnificent Person about Whom Christ was speaking is right now residing within my body as well as within yours, and is indwelling the hearts of all those who have put their faith in Christ as their Savior.

Because the Holy Spirit follows us wherever we go and because He has promised that He would never leave us or abandon us, we have unrestricted access to Him on a daily and continual basis. The Holy Spirit, who is omnipotent, omniscient, eternal, glorious, and gentle, has come to live in each one of us so that He can serve as our Advocate and Counselor, our Teacher and Instructor, our Comforter, and our Ever Present Helper in Times of Trouble. Each one of us has the Holy Spirit residing within our hearts, and He is all of these things.

Never forget that the Holy Spirit is already present within you, and that He is facing whatever it is that you are currently facing together with you. He will never abandon you to deal with it on your own but will be there for you in the name of Jesus, to whom all power and authority in heaven and on earth has been entrusted.

So brace your mental loins, put your trust in Him in this very moment, and He will see to it that all of your tomorrows are taken care of.

4. The Holy Spirit Convicts Mankind of Sin.

The Holy Spirit Convicts Mankind of Sin

The Lord Jesus was about to depart from the little group of men who had come to accept that “Jesus is Christ, the Son of the living God.” (Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God) They had anticipated that He would establish the prophesied kingdom, but instead they learned that He was departing, which, surprisingly, worked out for their benefit. What a state of disorientation they must have been in.

We are aware of the miraculous events that took place on the day of Pentecost because we have the Scriptures in our possession. On that day, the Holy Spirit was sent to them to assist and encourage them, to instruct and direct them into all truth. We are aware of the splendors of the secrets of the Church as well as the unfathomable riches of God, both of which would soon be made known to Paul. This would be the beautiful inheritance of the saints that is being preserved in heaven for us.

It was to the benefit of this small band that Jesus moved away, as He was to send the Holy Spirit as their indwelling Helper. This was to be accomplished after Jesus had left them. How frequently it is that we, too, do not comprehend the broader purpose for which God has created the universe, and instead choose to worry about the here and now rather than putting our faith in the ultimate plan that God has devised. When it comes down to it, everything hinges on whether or not we put our faith in God and put our lives and our futures in his hands, knowing that he will use everything for our good if we love him and are called according to his purpose.

Let us give gratitude to the Lord today for the unfathomable blessing that is the presence of the Holy Spirit within each and every believer in this age of the Church.

5. He Dwells in Every True Christian.

He Dwells in Every True Christian

Realizing that our weak human body is a temple of God is both a wonderful pleasure and a significant responsibility for Christians because our bodies are temples of God. When we put our faith in Jesus as our savior, one of the outcomes is that the Holy Spirit of God enters our lives and makes a permanent home outside of our mortal bodies.

Paul makes a strong appeal to these worldly believers to remember the serious truth when he warns the carnal Christians in Corinth that they were attempting to build up the Church by means of their own might and wisdom rather than the wisdom and strength of the Lord. He says, “You are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you.” (You are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you.)

We have the option of living our lives in our own strength rather than abiding in the power and strength that Christ provides. If we choose to do this, the house that we construct will be made of wood, hay, and stubble, and it will be destroyed in the end because there is nothing of value in me; I will be saved eternally, but I will not store up treasures in heaven. Alternately, we have the option of submitting ourselves to the Holy Spirit, dying to our own selves, and living for Christ, which will allow God to operate in us both to will and to do according to His pleasure. Additionally, gold, silver, and various precious stones will be extracted from the Refiner’s fire.

Let us acknowledge the incredible blessing, the enormous responsibility, and the grave reality that the Spirit of God has made our bodies his permanent abode, and let us then live our lives in a manner that is acceptable to the Lord.

6. He Guides Us to All Truth.

He Guides Us to All Truth

When the disciples of Jesus first began to come to terms with the fact that Jesus was going to leave them, it is difficult to fathom the sorrow and confusion that must have overtaken their minds and hearts. Even though He had been their Teacher and Protector for more than three years, and even though everyone acknowledged His wisdom and grace, there was still a significant amount of information that they needed to acquire from Him.

He had already made it clear to them that He would be departing from them and going back to the Father in heaven; however, in His tender compassion, the Lord Jesus reminded them that He would send the Spirit of truth to lead them into all truth “and to disclose to them what is yet to come.” This was in response to the fact that He had already told them that He would be leaving them and going back to the Father in heaven.

What a source of consolation it is to know that the good news of great joy, which spoke of the glorious gospel of Christ, will not come to a grinding halt at the departure of Christ, but that the Spirit of truth will come to guide them into the many truths that they are not yet ready to receive; truths that cannot yet be manifest before the victory on the Cross has been finally won.

There were still a lot of mysteries that needed to be cleared out between the apostle Paul and the Lord Jesus Christ. Mysteries associated with the Church, which is the Body of Christ; mysteries conceived by God before the establishment of the world; mysteries that had been kept secret from the ages and the generations who came before them

The unity of the Godhead is further demonstrated when we read that the Spirit “will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to us what is to come.” In the same way that Christ was one with the Father and only did those things that He heard from above.

Neither Christ nor the Spirit are under the Father’s authority, but they both frequently exhibit the kind of submission that is pleasing to the Father.

Our job is to listen to what the Spirit says to us, because the person who is submissive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit that resides within them is the person who will be guided into the truth of the glorious gospel of Christ and will be given godly wisdom and discernment in every aspect of their lives. Our job is to listen to what the Spirit says to us.

7. The Holy Spirit s the Source of Spiritual Gifts to the Believers.

Every follower of Jesus have the Holy Spirit within them, so it is impossible for them not to have a spiritual side. Every Christian receives at least one and sometimes more than one spiritual gift from the Holy Spirit for the purpose of furthering the mission of the church and contributing to the common good. No one can take credit for or acquire their own gifts. Because the same Spirit bestows them both, without charge and in His own good time, we can deduce that the possession of one or the other spiritual gift does not elevate a Christian’s status over that of another.

8. Seal the Lives of Those Who Believe.

Hearing the unadulterated and undistorted message of truth that is contained in the Word of God, which is the gospel of our salvation, is the means by which faith is gained. And Paul was overjoyed that after hearing this message of truth, these Christians BELIEVED, and that after believing, they were immediately SEALED with the Holy Spirit that had been promised to them.

As soon as a sinner believes the gospel of salvation, he is sealed with the Spirit, who is promised by the Father to everyone who believes in Christ. This happens the moment the sinner believes the gospel. What a source of comfort this is for the hearts of each and every one of God’s children. Because even when we fail to keep our end of the covenant, God continues to be faithful to us in Christ and to us eternally in the hands of the Father.

His promises are reliable and will stand the test of time. It is impossible to penetrate his tamper-proof seal. All those people who put their faith in Christ are given a gift of grace from our heavenly Father, which is that they are sealed in Christ by the Holy Spirit until the day of Redemption.

This truth is as certain and secure now as it was 2,000 years ago, because all of those who have believed that Christ died for their sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day to redeem us from the world, the flesh, and the devil are safely sealed in the palm of His hands. This truth is as sure and secure today as it was 2,000 years ago.

We have been anointed with the blood of Christ and marked with the ownership seal of the Spirit, who is the God-given GUARANTEE that everything that God has promised us will certainly come to reality. We were purchased with a price, and until the day of our redemption, we are sealed.

9. The Holy Spirit Gives Eternal Life and Makes Us New.

The presence of the Holy Spirit within those who are saved by grace through faith in Christ was one of the mysteries that had been kept hidden for a long time and many generations, but it was revealed to Paul for the believers of the Church age. This is true for all those who are saved by believing in Christ. How astounding it is that the Spirit of God has made our physical body into a temple through our faith, and that the risen Spirit of Christ dwells in our hearts and lives in our bodies, giving us the ability to live godly lives in Christ Jesus and enabling us to live the lives that God has always intended for us to live. We are not meant to rely on our own abilities but rather on those of the Lord, as it is how we were created to live. We were created to have joyful communion with our heavenly Father, to be led and directed by His Holy Spirit, who leads us into all truth, and to abide in Christ so that He may also abide in us. This is the purpose for which we were made.

Even though we can argue that our body is alive, we must never forget that as sinners, we are born spiritually dead in our sin. We are born with a fallen sin nature that is separated from God. Even though we can argue that our body is alive, we must never forget that as sinners, we are born spiritually dead in our sin. We must not lose sight of the fact that we live in a body that is vulnerable to evil, sickness, deterioration, and ultimately, death.

Simply putting our trust in Christ as Savior and Lord is the only way to receive God’s grace and become spiritually alive. It is only at the moment of our salvation that the Spirit of Christ is able to take up residence in our hearts, causing our human spirit to be reborn and brought back to life in the process. Only through having trust in the accomplished work of Christ on the cross are we able to receive both the indwelling Spirit of Christ as well as the righteousness that is credited to us by Christ.

If someone does not have the Spirit of Christ, it means that they are spiritually dead and do not belong to Christ. Those who do not have the Spirit of Christ are not saved. But if Christ is in you, then you have been reborn by trust in the completion of His work. You have been saved by God’s grace through faith in Christ. You are spiritually alive, with the actual Spirit of the risen Christ residing within your actual body.

The human body is nothing more than a temporary dwelling for the human spirit and soul that dwells within us. Because of sin and the sin nature that has been imputed to us, even though our spirit has been made alive and we have a new nature that is like Christ because of our faith in Him, our bodies are still vulnerable to death. To give thanks to God, however, even if the body is passing away as a result of sin, the spirit is eternally alive as a result of righteousness; our once-dead human spirit is now alive because of faith in Christ. In point of fact, it was brought to life as a result of the imputed righteousness that we received at the time of our redemption through faith in Christ.

10. The Holy Spirit Sanctifies the Believers.

As followers of Christ, we are compelled to walk in spirit and truth in our daily lives, as well as to live our lives in accordance with the teachings of the Holy Spirit. As followers of Christ, we are called to lead a spiritual life rather than a physical one; to produce the fruit of the Spirit rather than the works of the flesh; and to live our lives in accordance with grace rather than the requirements of the law. As followers of Christ, we are commanded to walk by the Spirit because if we do so, we will not give in to the inclinations of our body.

Scripture points out to us in a number of different places that the only way for us to walk by means of the Spirit is if we give Him complete reign over our lives. Only when we are led by the Holy Spirit of truth and guided by His Word of truth are we able to live in spirit and truth. There is no other way.

To live the spiritual life that God requires of each and every one of His children, it is necessary for us to be willing, in every circumstance that we encounter, to submit to the will and the authority of God. In all of our day-to-day dealings, we are to continue to be submissive to His direction and obedient to His corrections. We are to put our faith in His Word, pay attention to His voice, and rely solely on Him. It is not appropriate for us to rely on our own human capabilities, deeds, intuition, or strength; rather, we are to only act in accordance with what we hear from Him.

The activities of the soul and the body are diametrically opposed to one another. They have an unhealthy competition for one another and are not at all compatible with one another. Throughout the entirety of our life on earth, our reborn human spirit and our previous, sinful fleshly nature will continue to be sworn enemies and to be at odds with one another. But because of the fact that Christ was raised from the dead, we have been given the ability to walk by the Spirit, which means that we do not have to give in to the lusts of our old, carnal, sinful nature.

When Paul screamed out, “O miserable man that I am, who shall save me from this dying body,” he was acknowledging the inner turmoil that we all experience and the fact that he himself was experiencing it. Paul was aware of the inner turmoil that he experienced at the center of his being, but he also was aware that the solution to overcoming the lust of the flesh might be found in the person of Jesus Christ. He alone has given us the power to fight the desires of the flesh, and we do so when we walk in spirit and truth, submitting ourselves to the Holy Spirit of Christ. He is the only one who has done this for us.

The term “flesh” corresponds to our previous sinful nature, also known as “the old man,” which was crucified along with Christ when we placed our faith in Him as our Savior. As we live in the spirit and the truth, we are to remember that our fallen nature, that “old man,” was nailed to the Cross and will remain forever crippled. To walk by the Spirit and be empowered to live as God has intended for us to live, we must first submit ourselves to the Holy Spirit and depend on Him by grace through faith in Christ. Only then will we be able to walk in the way that God has for us to live.

11. The Holy Spirit Empowers Us for Evangelism.

Our primary responsibility here on earth is to share the good news about Jesus and to help others become his followers. It was the very last word that Jesus spoke before he went into heaven.

Because the Holy Spirit is with us, we have the power to be witnesses to what God has done. Telling people about what Jesus did for them on the cross, as well as how he triumphed over death and now rules victorious, is an important part of the Christian faith. You are obligated to be a representative for Christ, thus there is no reason to avoid more fulfilling this role. Permit the Holy Spirit to fill you with his power so that you might accomplish the goal of the Kingdom and make disciples.

12. He Makes Us to be More Like Christ.

He Makes Us to be More Like Christ

The Holy Spirit is the only one who can transform the old life we had in Adam into the new life we have in Christ, which we received when we were saved. Behavior modification of the old sin nature may produce a superficial change that satisfies the standards of the world, but only the Holy Spirit can transform the old life into the new life we have in Christ.

May we continue to be transformed into the image and likeness of our Lord Jesus Christ with each passing day, and may we proclaim His mercy and grace not only with our mouths but also with our lives, by giving ourselves over to the honor and glory of our Lord.

The Fruits of the Holy Spirit

Those who have placed their faith in Christ are distinguishable from those who have not done so by the fact that they have received the Holy Spirit as a gift, which enables them to produce fruit. In other words, the sanctification that is taking place in their souls is shown through the changes that they have made in their lives. What exactly are these fruits, how does the Bible describe them, and how do they manifest themselves in the Christian life that we live?

In our life, however, the Holy Spirit bears the following kinds of fruit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These things are not restricted by any laws. – Galatians 5:22-23

The following are the 9 fruits of the Holy Spirit according to the Scriptures:

  1. Love
  2. Joy
  3. Peace
  4. Patience
  5. Kindness
  6. Goodness
  7. Faithfulness
  8. Gentleness
  9. Self-Control
