Evangelist Ray Comfort, founder of Living Waters ministry, recently faced an unexpected and unsettling situation at his office in Bellflower, California. Known for his dynamic street preaching and bestselling books, Comfort has spent decades spreading the Gospel, but the events of July 20, 2025, challenged his sense of safety.
Comfort, who has lived in the U.S. for over 35 years, has always felt secure in Bellflower, a city he describes as peaceful. "In the 35 years I’ve lived in the U.S., I’ve never seen a gun pulled in our city," he remarked, reflecting on the generally calm atmosphere of the area. However, that sense of tranquility was shaken when a staff member discovered signs of a break-in.
The incident began when a staff member noticed something unusual in the parking lot. After reviewing security footage, Comfort’s wife, Sue, made a startling discovery. She observed a man wandering the property, trying various doors. "At one point, she called me over and said, ‘Look at this, he’s lifting one of our warehouse doors and crawling under it,’" Comfort recounted. Alarmingly, the man did not come back out, prompting an immediate call to the authorities.
The police response was swift and involved multiple squad cars, fire trucks, and even a helicopter. Comfort later learned that the suspect had barricaded himself inside the warehouse and was reportedly under the influence of drugs and armed with a knife. "We pray every day that God would direct our steps and keep our family from harm. That day, He clearly did," Comfort said, expressing gratitude that Sue was not at the ministry that day.
Comfort speculated that the suspect was likely not targeting the ministry specifically but was instead seeking something to steal to support a drug habit. "We’re currently undergoing renovations, and with construction in full swing, it was easy for [the suspect] to slip through a temporary wall," he explained.
Despite the unsettling nature of the event, Comfort remained focused on the greater mission of the Church. "These are dark times, and it’s the responsibility of the Church to step up and boldly preach the Gospel—the message of the cross and the necessity of repentance before the Day of Judgment," he stated.
Comfort emphasized the importance of sharing the Gospel, even with those who find themselves in difficult circumstances. "Only when hearts are changed by the power of the Gospel will people love righteousness and desire to please God. That kind of change impacts individuals, families, communities, and entire nations."
In light of this incident, Comfort’s commitment to evangelism remains steadfast. He encourages Christians to remain vigilant and proactive in sharing their faith, especially in challenging times. The world may be facing uncertainty, but the message of hope found in Christ continues to shine brightly, calling all to repentance and faith.
