“Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.”
— Proverbs 26:20 KJV
Reflection on Today's Verse
Picture it: a campfire. Warm, cozy, and harmless… until someone throws on a log soaked in lighter fluid. Boom—chaos. That’s gossip for you. At first, it feels like harmless chatter—“Did you hear about so-and-so?”—but before you know it, you’re fueling a blaze that scorches relationships, burns trust, and leaves ashes of regret. Yikes.
The genius of this proverb is in its quiet call to let things die down. Ever tried arguing with yourself? Not very satisfying, right? Gossip thrives on participation—like a potluck, but everyone’s bringing drama instead of casseroles. Remove the gossiper or refuse to engage, and boom—the fire fizzles. No fuel, no flame.
But let’s be real: gossip is sneaky. It disguises itself as “venting,” “concern,” or my personal favorite, “prayer requests.” (“Lord, we lift up Karen in this time of… questionable life choices.”) We’ve all been there. Yet, the verse gently nudges us to ask: Am I adding wood to this fire or pouring on water? Sometimes, keeping quiet is the most powerful thing you can do—silent wisdom over senseless words.
This verse reminds us that peace isn’t passive—it’s intentional. So next time gossip comes knocking, try shutting the door. Or better yet, change the subject to something neutral, like the weather. (“Speaking of storms, how ‘bout that forecast?”) Sure, it’s awkward, but hey, you might just save a relationship—and your integrity.
And if all else fails? Just keep some marshmallows handy. Fires burn out faster when no one’s feeding them, but if you’re stuck in the heat, at least enjoy some s’mores.
Personal Prayer
Teach me, Lord, to recognize when my words have the potential to harm, and give me the grace to hold my tongue. Let my speech reflect Your love and truth, building others up instead of tearing them down. Help me to be a peacemaker in every situation, not someone who stirs up strife or spreads unnecessary chatter.
When I’m tempted to join in gossip, remind me that silence can be holy, and kindness can be contagious. Fill my heart with Your Spirit so that what overflows from my mouth brings life, not destruction.
Lord, may my words honor You. And when I fail, may Your mercy remind me to try again.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
