“The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness.“
— Proverbs 10:32 KJV
Reflection on Today's Verse
Some people speak like they’re handing out bricks. Heavy. Sharp. No care for where they land. You walk away bruised and wondering why words—just air and sound—can hit like that.
And then there’s the other kind. The kind of speech that makes your shoulders drop. Like someone opened a window in a stuffy room. It doesn’t always sound “religious.” But it’s right. Not because it checks a rulebook—because it knows the weight of grace. That kind of speech knows when to stay quiet. It knows when to tell the truth, but not to crush. It knows when to warn, and when to hold someone’s heart like a fragile thing.
Proverbs isn’t just saying “be polite.” It’s deeper. The lips of the righteous know. There’s a kind of discernment that only comes from walking close to Jesus—when your own mouth has been silenced by mercy. When you remember what it was like to speak frowardness… to wound, to react, to let pride drive the sentence.
The wicked don’t care what their words do. That’s the difference. They speak frowardness—not just stumble into it. It’s in the bloodstream. But those who’ve been made righteous—by blood, not behavior—start to feel the tremble of words before they release them. Because they’ve seen what words can do. And they’ve heard what one Word did to rescue them.
You want to speak life? Don’t try harder to sound holy. Stay near the one who made you holy already. The mouth will follow the heart. And the heart learns what’s acceptable when it’s been humbled by grace.
Personal Prayer
Father, pull my heart in close today. I don’t want to speak carelessly. I don’t want my words to bruise. If there’s pride hiding behind my tone, dig it out. If there’s bitterness shaping my sentences, cleanse it. Let my mouth be shaped by mercy, not moods.
Teach me to pause. Teach me to bless. Not because I’m trying to earn approval—but because I already have Yours, and that changes everything. Let my words carry the scent of Christ, not the stench of self. Amen.
