Police Encourage Anyone with Information on Sexual Abuse at Faith Life Church to Step Forward

The Licking County Sheriff’s Office has recently taken a significant step in addressing serious allegations of sexual abuse involving Gary Thomas "Tom" Keesee, a prominent figure associated with Faith Life Church in Ohio. This development comes after the sheriff’s office assumed control of the investigation, following a conflict of interest that arose with other authorities connected to the case.

In an official statement on Facebook, the Licking County Sheriff’s Office encouraged anyone with relevant information about the allegations against Tom Keesee to come forward. They emphasized the importance of transparency and cooperation in such sensitive matters, urging individuals to report any concerns, even if they had previously communicated with other law enforcement agencies.

The accusations against Keesee are particularly troubling, with claims surfacing from his own sister, Kirsten McKinney, along with other former members of Faith Life Church. Until his resignation last August, Tom Keesee served as the chief media officer for the church, which was founded by his parents, Gary and Drenda Keesee. The church has not publicly commented on the allegations but has expressed a commitment to support those who have come forward with their experiences.

The allegations gained further attention following a change.org petition calling for a thorough investigation into the claims, which reportedly include inappropriate contact with minors. This petition drew public commentary from Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, highlighting the community’s concern over the serious nature of the allegations.

A report was filed with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office on Christmas Eve, detailing an incident of sexual abuse involving a juvenile. This report alleged that the abuse occurred at two different locations within Knox County. In light of the serious nature of these allegations, the Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation recognized the conflict of interest due to personal ties with Drenda Keesee, who is not only a co-senior pastor at Faith Life Church but also serves as a Knox County Commissioner. Consequently, the case was transferred to the Licking County Sheriff’s Office for an impartial investigation.

Katie Tabor, an attorney representing Faith Life Church, acknowledged the "serious allegations concerning past conduct involving a member of our church leaders’ family." She expressed the church’s willingness to be open and cooperative with authorities, stating, "We want to express our deepest compassion for those who have come forward and for anyone who has experienced harm. We recognize the courage it takes to speak out."

Kirsten McKinney’s decision to publicly share her story has encouraged at least 11 others to come forward with similar experiences. In her heartfelt message on Facebook, she stated, "Many are aware of allegations involving a family member. I was a victim, and when I learned of ongoing concerns for others’ safety in combination with others’ stories I already knew, I felt a responsibility to step forward."

As this situation continues to unfold, it underscores the importance of accountability and support for those affected by abuse within faith communities. The Licking County Sheriff’s Office is actively seeking information to ensure a thorough investigation, and they encourage anyone with insights or experiences related to these allegations to reach out.

For those seeking further support or resources regarding abuse, organizations such as RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) provide valuable assistance and information. It is crucial for survivors to know that they are not alone and that there are pathways to healing and justice.

As the investigation progresses, the community remains hopeful for a resolution that honors the courage of those who have come forward and promotes healing for all involved.
