“For we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother.”
— Philemon 1:7 KJV
Reflection on Today's Verse
Paul is in prison—dark, dank, probably smells terrible. Yet here he is, writing about joy. Why? Because Philemon, through his love and faith, is out there doing the most—making people feel seen, cared for, and uplifted. And honestly, isn’t that the heart of the gospel? Not grand gestures or flashy sermons, but small, consistent acts of kindness that remind people they’re not forgotten.
Philemon’s “refreshing” vibe makes me think of a cold glass of lemonade on a sweltering summer day. (Or iced coffee, if you’re one of those people.) His love was the kind that didn’t just check a box; it lingered. It wasn’t performative; it was restorative. It wasn’t about him; it was about others.
So here’s the challenge for us: how can we be the kind of people whose love refreshes others? Maybe it’s a text to a friend going through a tough time, an extra dose of patience with that co-worker who’s always…well, “extra,” or simply choosing to listen instead of waiting to talk. Refreshing hearts isn’t complicated—it’s just inconvenient enough to reveal what (or who) we prioritize.
At the end of the day, this verse reminds us that when we love like Philemon, we’re not just handing out joy to others. We’re joining in the bigger work of God—offering a glimpse of His love that never stops, never gives up, and always, always refreshes.
Personal Prayer
Lord, I am grateful for the people in my life who have been like Philemon to me—encouraging me when I was weary, showing kindness when I least deserved it, and reflecting Your love in ways that have strengthened my faith.
Help me, Lord, to be that kind of person for others. Teach me to love with intention and grace, not out of obligation but as a natural response to the love You’ve shown me. Give me eyes to see those who need encouragement, ears to listen with compassion, and hands ready to serve with joy.
When the demands of life make me self-focused, remind me that refreshing the hearts of others is part of Your plan to refresh my own. And when I feel like I have nothing left to give, help me to draw from the endless well of Your Spirit, where love and joy overflow.
Thank You for calling me to be a small part of Your greater work, Lord. May my love be a reflection of Yours—constant, healing, and life-giving.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
