On the eve of the anniversary of Roe v. Wade’s reversal, pro-life advocates are gearing up for a significant event on Capitol Hill that aims to highlight the lives lost to abortion while also providing tangible support to families in need. This initiative, dubbed "America’s Largest Diaper Giveaway," is set to bring together close to 400,000 diapers in a powerful demonstration of both remembrance and generosity.
Organized by Students for Life of America (SFLA) and various pro-life allies, the event is scheduled for Saturday during the "National Celebrate Life Weekend." Kristan Hawkins, the president of SFLA and Students for Life Action, emphasized the dual purpose of this display: to honor the preborn lives lost to abortion and to remind lawmakers of the urgent need for action against abortion providers like Planned Parenthood.
"We want to show lawmakers the price of their inaction," Hawkins stated. The nearly 400,000 diapers represent the estimated number of preborn children lost to abortion at Planned Parenthood facilities this year. "We’re not just making a statement; we’re also demonstrating what the pro-life movement does every day to support women and families."
As the Senate considers the House-approved "Big, Beautiful Bill," which proposes to strip federal funding from the nation’s largest abortion provider, Hawkins hopes the sight of the diaper display will serve as a poignant reminder of the pro-life movement’s commitment to both advocacy and aid. "It’s crucial for America to see the pro-life generation in action," she added.
The diapers, procured from the pro-life company EveryLife, cost over $100,000, a sum raised through donations from supporters of the organization. Other pro-life groups, including And Then There Were None and Sidewalk Advocates for Life, have also contributed to the fundraising efforts by sharing the donation link across social media platforms.
Once the diapers are displayed on Capitol Hill, the plan is to distribute them to churches, pregnancy resource centers, and families in need. Those interested in receiving diapers can sign up online to request specific sizes and quantities. Hawkins noted, "This will be the largest diaper giveaway in American history, showcasing not only the tragedy of what Planned Parenthood continues to do but also the hope and support that the pro-life movement provides through countless pregnancy centers and maternity homes."
According to Planned Parenthood’s 2023-2024 annual report, the organization performed over 400,000 abortions last fiscal year, marking an increase from the previous year. This report has intensified calls from pro-life advocates to defund the organization, particularly in light of the nearly $800 million in public funding it received despite a decline in legitimate health services like cancer screenings.
Hawkins described the diaper drive as one of the most ambitious activism efforts her organization has undertaken, even surpassing a previous display of 200,000 baby socks on the U.S. Capitol lawn in 2017. "This is the most logistically challenging thing we’ve ever done," she explained, detailing the coordination required for transporting and distributing the diapers.
On the day of the event, around 200 students and staff from SFLA will be on hand to assist with the diaper drive. Various teams within the organization, including Standing With You and the Abortion-Free Cities Campaign, are collaborating to ensure the success of this initiative. "Every team in our organization is focused on this," Hawkins affirmed, highlighting the collective effort behind the diaper giveaway.
As the pro-life movement continues to advocate for the rights of the unborn, this event stands as a powerful reminder of their commitment to both raising awareness and providing real support to families. With the diaper drive, pro-life advocates are not just making a statement; they are actively demonstrating their dedication to life, love, and community support.
