Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? — Matthew 6:25 KJV
For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is life not more than food, and the body more than clothing? — Matthew 6:25 NASB
Reflection
At first glance, it almost seems unrealistic, doesn’t it? I mean, we live in a world that constantly bombards us with reasons to worry — bills to pay, jobs to keep, health to manage. It feels like the message is: “Just don’t worry.” But it’s not a careless shrug at life’s real concerns. I think what Jesus is doing here is redirecting our hearts and minds to something greater.
There’s something deeper when He asks, “Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?” It’s like He’s saying, “Hey, you’re missing the bigger picture. There’s more to life than just getting by.” And I think that’s the heart of it — we spend so much energy on things that, in the end, don’t define us.
Jesus is reminding us to trust. And not just trust in some vague, wishy-washy way but to trust in a God who knows every detail of our lives. He’s not oblivious to our needs. If anything, He’s more aware of them than we are.
For me, this verse is a challenge to let go. Not in an irresponsible way but in a way that acknowledges that I’m not in control of everything (even though I often try to be). It’s about releasing that death grip we have on life’s uncertainties and trusting that God’s got us covered. He’s always been faithful, so why would He stop now?
So next time I catch myself spiraling into worry, I’ll remind myself of this — that life is more than the things that stress me out. It’s about the bigger, beautiful picture God is painting with my life, even if I can’t always see the colors right now.
My Prayer
Father, teach me how to let go, God. Help me remember that my life is so much more than the things I often obsess over—what I’ll eat, what I’ll wear, how things will turn out. You are my provider, and You know exactly what I need before I even ask. Thank You for caring for me so deeply, for seeing my needs and reminding me that I am more valuable to You than anything else.
Lord, when I start to worry, gently bring me back to You. Quiet the fears that try to creep in. Help me trust You with the unknown, knowing that You hold every moment in Your hands. May I live in the peace that comes from resting in Your promises, knowing You are faithful.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
