“For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:“
— Ephesians 5:8 KJV
Reflection on Today's Verse
This verse isn’t just a nice poetic contrast between light and darkness—it’s a radical identity shift. Paul doesn’t say we were in darkness. He says we were darkness. That’s deep. Before Christ, darkness wasn’t just around us; it was who we were. Our thoughts, desires, and decisions were shaped by it. But then Jesus.
When He saves us, He doesn’t just sprinkle some light on our lives—He makes us light. That’s a complete transformation. And because of that, we’re called to live differently. Not just avoiding sin, but actively shining—bringing truth, love, and goodness wherever we go.
But let’s be real. Some days, we don’t feel very “light.” We struggle, we stumble, we feel the pull of old habits. Yet, our identity in Christ isn’t based on feelings—it’s a reality secured in Him. The key is to keep walking with Him, letting His truth shape how we live, think, and love.
So today, maybe ask: Am I reflecting Christ’s light, or am I blending into the shadows? Because if we are light, let’s live like it.
Personal Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me out of darkness and making me light in You. I confess that sometimes I forget who I am in You—I let fear, doubt, or old habits dim the light You’ve placed in me. But today, I choose to walk as a child of light.
Shine through me, Lord. In my words, in my actions, in my thoughts—let Your truth and love be what others see. When I’m tempted to blend into the shadows, remind me that I was made to shine. Help me to reflect Your goodness, to bring hope where there is despair, and to stand firm in Your truth.
Guide my steps, Holy Spirit. Lead me in the light, so that my life glorifies You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
