“Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.“
— Ephesians 3:20 KJV
Reflection on Today's Verse
God can do more than what we ask. That already sounds generous. But then Paul throws in, “or imagine.” So not just the prayers we’ve managed to piece together through tears, coffee, or shaky faith—but the ones that didn’t even make it out of our heads. The wild ones. The impossible ones. The ones we’re too polite or too tired or too afraid to say out loud.
And then he says immeasurably more. Not “a little extra.” Not “slightly above your expectations.” Not “the deluxe package if you’ve been good.” No. We’re talking about a God whose definition of more completely ignores our math.
Now here’s the kicker: this isn’t just some magic trick God does from the clouds. Paul says this is according to his power that is at work within us. Us. As in, the tired people. The doubting people. The people who still forget to pray, who binge Netflix instead of reading Scripture, who love Jesus and still get road rage in traffic.
Somehow, God is using us—flawed, inconsistent, peanut-butter-for-dinner us—as the means through which he unleashes power that goes beyond imagination. That’s either ridiculous or the most comforting thing ever. Maybe both.
So if you’re staring down a situation that feels like too much—too messy, too broken, too late—just remember: He’s not limited to what you can think up. He’s not pacing in heaven, hoping you have a clever idea he can bless. His power doesn’t run off your battery life
So dream. Pray. Imagine. But don’t be surprised when He answers with something wilder, better, or completely different. Because that’s kind of His thing.
Personal Prayer
God, sometimes I don’t even know what to ask for. I bring You tired prayers, vague hopes, and dreams I’ve quietly buried because they felt too big. But You say You can do immeasurably more—more than I ask, more than I imagine. That kind of power humbles me. It also comforts me, because it means I don’t have to have it all figured out. I just have to bring it to You.
So here it is—everything I’m carrying. The fear, the frustration, the deep longing, the questions I haven’t said out loud. You already know. You’re already working. And not in distant, unreachable ways, but right here, in me. Even when I can’t see it. Even when I forget. You’re still moving.
Teach me to pray like I believe You’re really that good. That present. That powerful. Don’t let me shrink my faith to fit my circumstances. Let me dream bigger because You’re the one I’m talking to. Thank You for being the God of “immeasurably more.” I trust You with all of it.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
