Reflection on Today's Verse
When you’re doing well, it humbles you: “Not by works of righteousness which we have done…” So you can’t boast… because you didn’t earn it. When you’re doing poorly, it comforts you: you don’t have to panic and “make up for it” to be accepted again… because you weren’t saved by your performance in the first place.
Paul points you to God’s mercy as the reason you’re saved, and then he describes what God did: a real cleansing and a real renewal. The “washing of regeneration” isn’t you scrubbing yourself clean—it’s God giving you new life. The “renewing of the Holy Ghost” is God continuing to work in you from the inside out.
So today, if you feel pressure to prove yourself to God, let this verse settle you. Your standing with Him rests on Christ and His mercy… not your best day… and not your worst day.
Personal Prayer
Father, thank You that You saved me not by works of righteousness which I have done, but according to Your mercy. Thank You for the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Ghost. When my heart tries to perform for acceptance, remind me that I am accepted because of Christ.
Give me a quiet confidence today… resting in Your grace, walking in newness of life, and letting Your Spirit renew my mind. Use me to show mercy to others the way You have shown mercy to me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
