NYC Remembers Mass Shooting Victims as Fallen Officers Widow Urges, Pray for Us

In the wake of a tragic shooting that shook New York City, communities are coming together in prayer and support for the victims’ families. On Monday night, a former football player named Shane Tamura opened fire in a Manhattan skyscraper, resulting in the deaths of four individuals, including a police officer, a beloved security guard, and two professionals from the real estate sector.

The incident took place at 345 Park Avenue, a location near iconic landmarks such as Rockefeller Center and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. According to reports, Tamura, 27, drove from Las Vegas to commit this horrific act before taking his own life. The victims have been identified as Wesley LePatner, 43; Didarul Islam, 36; Aland Etienne, 46; and Julia Hyman.

Didarul Islam, a dedicated member of the New York City Police Department, leaves behind a pregnant wife and two young sons. An online fundraising campaign has been launched to support his family, with over $181,000 raised towards a goal of $500,000. The campaign highlights Islam’s character, describing him as a devoted father, caring husband, and a friend to many. His family expressed profound sorrow, stating, "He was known for his soft-spoken nature, boundless kindness, and unwavering willingness to help anyone in need."

The NYPD’s Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch revealed that Tamura entered the building armed with an AR-15-style rifle, where he unleashed gunfire in the lobby. Eyewitnesses recounted the chaos as people scrambled for safety. Tamura allowed one woman to exit an elevator before proceeding to the 33rd floor, where he took his own life after shooting another victim.

Wesley LePatner was a senior managing director at Blackstone Real Estate and is remembered as a loving wife, mother, and friend. Her family shared their grief, stating, "At this unbearably painful time, we are experiencing an enormous, gaping hole in our hearts that will never be filled." Julia Hyman was an associate at Rudin Management, the firm that confirmed the loss of one of its employees in the shooting.

Aland Etienne, the security officer killed in the attack, was remembered by the 32BJ Service Employees International Union as someone who took his responsibilities seriously and was deeply committed to his job. The union expressed their condolences, stating, "We extend our deep condolences to the families and friends who lost loved ones, including that of our own member."

In a poignant interfaith prayer vigil held in Bryant Park, New York Governor Kathy Hochul called for unity and compassion amidst the tragedy. She emphasized the importance of love and support for those affected, stating, "They say that grief is the price you pay for love. What does that mean? It means there were four individuals who just a little more than 24 hours ago walked this earth."

Governor Hochul also highlighted the need for gun control measures, echoing the sentiments of many who are calling for change in the wake of this senseless violence. "As I spoke to the young widow, an expectant mother of two, I just tried to convey again that sense of compassion that all of us as human beings feel," she said, underscoring the collective grief experienced by the community.

As the investigation continues, communities across New York and beyond are rallying to support the victims’ families, reminding us of the strength found in unity and prayer during the darkest of times.
