Assemblies of God Church Hit with New Lawsuit Alleging Failure to Safeguard Children from Abuse at Summer Camp

A Florida church and its associated district are under scrutiny following a new lawsuit that raises serious allegations regarding the safety of children at a summer camp. The Horowitz Law firm, known for representing victims of abuse, has filed the lawsuit against Ignite Life Center and the Florida Multicultural District of the Assemblies of God, claiming they failed to protect minors from abuse during a congregation-sponsored summer camp.

According to the complaint lodged in the Orange County Circuit Court, a 10-year-old girl was reportedly sexually abused during the Ignite Summer Internship program back in July 2018. This incident is particularly alarming as it occurred just months after the church was allegedly informed of a separate case involving a minor who had been arrested for abusing multiple children in February 2018.

This lawsuit marks the fifth time the Horowitz Law firm has taken legal action against the church related to abuse allegations at the summer camp. In recent years, the Ignite Life Church has faced significant legal challenges, with multiple individuals connected to the camp being arrested on charges of child abuse. For instance, Gabriel Hemenez, a former volunteer at the camp, was arrested in 2023 for allegedly inappropriately touching three minors and an adult. Hemenez confessed to his crimes and was sentenced to five years in prison, followed by eight years of probation, in addition to being designated a registered sex offender for life.

The troubling pattern of abuse has not stopped there. Other arrests linked to the church include Christian David Vargas and Noel Cruz, both of whom face serious charges related to lewd conduct involving minors. The community is understandably shaken by these events, prompting many to question the safety measures in place at the camp.

In March 2024, Ignite Life and the Florida Multicultural District faced three lawsuits from victims of abuse, which were settled through mediation in October 2024. The details of these settlements remain confidential, leaving many in the community wondering about the full extent of the church’s accountability.

The Ignite Life Church and its district have yet to publicly comment on the latest lawsuit or the previous allegations. As the legal proceedings unfold, many are calling for greater transparency and accountability within the church community to ensure the safety of children in their care.

As this situation develops, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding children in all environments, especially those affiliated with religious organizations. Parents and guardians are encouraged to remain vigilant and proactive in seeking information about the safety protocols in place at any summer camps or youth programs they consider for their children.
