Yuri Cordero: A Faithful Leader in Hispanic Media
Yuri Cordero stands as a remarkable figure in the world of Hispanic television, boasting nearly three decades of experience with Univision. As the vice president and executive producer of "Primer Impacto," she has played a pivotal role in shaping one of the longest-running programs in U.S. Hispanic media. With five Emmy nominations under her belt, Cordero’s influence extends far beyond the screen.
In a recent interview with Christian Post Español, Cordero opened up about her faith journey, the challenges she faces in the secular media landscape, and her mission to uplift the Hispanic community.
Faith in a Secular World
Cordero’s experience in the media industry has taught her that maintaining one’s faith in a secular environment can be challenging but rewarding. She shares that Univision has always respected her beliefs, stating, "They’ve never told me not to talk about my faith or participate in conferences." This has allowed her to express her spirituality freely, even as she encourages others who may feel pressured to conceal their beliefs. She boldly declares, "If others don’t hide who they are, neither will I. The Bible says I am not ashamed of the Gospel."
Her office is a testament to her creative approach to sharing faith. Cordero keeps a box filled with Bible verses, inviting colleagues to take a message of encouragement. "People think it’s chocolate, but when they find out what it is, many come back looking for more," she chuckles, highlighting the unexpected joy her simple act brings to others.
A Personal Journey of Faith and Healing
Cordero’s faith was put to the test in 2018 after she covered the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Shortly after, she found herself on a spiritual journey that led her to a Christian church, which she describes as "practical" and "grounded." However, her newfound faith was soon challenged by a cancer diagnosis. Instead of feeling abandoned, she recognized that God had prepared her for this moment, stating, "Instead of asking myself ‘Why me?’ I understood that it was part of a larger plan."
Working while battling cancer was no easy feat. Cordero chose to keep her diagnosis private, not wanting pity or special treatment. "Very few people knew about my diagnosis because I didn’t want them to treat me differently," she explained. Her unwavering faith played a crucial role in her recovery, allowing her to emerge stronger and more determined.
Empowering the Hispanic Community through High Grace
As a leader, Cordero is committed to empowering others, which led her to establish High Grace—a mentorship and leadership platform named after her grandmother, Altagracia. Through High Grace, she offers boot camps and conferences focused on purposeful living and effective leadership. "Knowledge gives authority, and leadership requires consistency and execution," she emphasizes, reflecting her belief in the power of education and mentorship.
Cordero is acutely aware of the challenges facing the Hispanic community, particularly regarding immigration issues. "Many families have been in this country for decades and have contributed enormously. Their cases cannot be simply ignored," she asserts. As a Christian, she believes in balancing respect for the law with the biblical commandment to love one’s neighbor. "We are not here to judge, but to show love and support," she adds.
Facing New Challenges with Faith
In 2023, Cordero faced yet another challenge when diagnosed with a brain aneurysm. "It was a very scary time because I couldn’t get upset or maintain the pace of life I was living," she recalled. Yet again, her faith became her refuge. Following a successful surgery, she experienced what she considers a divine sign: "The next thing I knew, I was in room 12, a number with great biblical symbolism. I felt God confirming to me that everything was under His control."
A Life of Purpose
For Yuri Cordero, every experience is an opportunity for growth and a chance to strengthen her faith. "Our work, wherever it may be, must be done as if it were for the Kingdom of God," she reflects. Through her leadership, resilience, and spirituality, Cordero continues to inspire countless individuals in the Hispanic community to live with purpose and determination.
In a world where faith can often feel sidelined, Cordero shines as a reminder that it is possible to be both a professional and a devoted believer. Her journey is a powerful narrative of hope, resilience, and unwavering faith, encouraging others to embrace their beliefs boldly and live out their purpose with conviction.
