“The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things.”
— Titus 2:3 KJV
Reflection on Today's Verse
It’s interesting how the call here isn’t just about what older women should avoid, but also who they’re meant to be. Reverent, not gossipy, and balanced. The wine bit always gets a chuckle because, let’s face it, first-century wine was probably more necessary hydration than cocktail hour indulgence, but Paul’s not just nitpicking here. He’s pointing to a life of self-control and dignity.
And then there’s this beautiful pivot: “teach what is good.” Isn’t it amazing how Paul doesn’t say, “Just don’t mess up”? No, he’s inviting older women into the role of mentors, sages, the wise ones passing down the torch. It’s such a far cry from how society often sidelines older women. Here, Paul’s essentially saying, “You’re a treasure chest of experiences—use it!”
The challenge? Being that kind of woman in a world that loves to tempt us into petty feuds and indulgences. But the reward? A legacy that echoes in the lives of younger women who’ll rise up wiser and stronger because of your influence.
So, cheers to reverence (with maybe just one glass of wine) and teaching what’s good. You never know—your words might just be the spark someone else’s faith needs to catch fire.
Personal Prayer
Lord, thank You for the wisdom in Your Word that guides us toward lives of reverence and purpose. Help me to walk with dignity and grace, avoiding words or actions that could harm others. Teach me self-control in every area, whether it’s in my speech, my habits, or my heart.
Fill me with Your Spirit so that I can teach what is good—not just with my words, but through the way I live. Let my life be a reflection of Your love and truth, inspiring and encouraging those around me.
Grant me humility to learn from those who’ve walked before me and courage to pass on wisdom to those coming after me. May my days be marked by faithfulness and a legacy of pointing others to You.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
