“But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.”
— Romans 7:6 KJV
Reflection on Today's Verse
Alright, picture this: we’re all tired runners in a never-ending relay race, grasping at rules and “shoulds,” hoping they’ll make us holy. This verse is like God saying, “Hey, good news—you’re not running for the law anymore. In fact, you’re done with that track. Now, you get to run with the Spirit.”
Paul’s not exactly giving us permission to toss morality to the wind, though! Instead, he’s hinting at something radical: following Christ means the rulebook isn’t our master anymore. Imagine you’re used to staring at this manual on “How to Live Right,” flipping through it anxiously, maybe even tapping on each page for guidance. But then, suddenly, God hands you a new compass—the Spirit, who lives inside you, guiding you moment by moment, with grace as your north star. Now, that’s an upgrade!
It’s a relief, right? We’ve left the rigidity of the law—constantly checking if we’re “doing enough”—and entered a space of freedom where our obedience comes from love, not legalism. In the old system, you’re trying not to mess up. In the Spirit, you’re learning to love up. Instead of obsessing over each step, we’re free to walk with Him, messiness and all, trusting He’ll keep us aligned.
The best part? Serving in this “new way of the Spirit” feels more like dancing than duty. We’re invited to live a life that’s energized and directed by God’s love within us, not by a checklist outside us. And sure, we’re gonna stumble and miss a beat or two. But hey, grace is the music, and we’re all learning the steps.
Personal Prayer
Lord, thank You for freeing me from the weight of the law and inviting me to live in the freedom of Your Spirit. I’m grateful that I don’t have to measure up by my own strength but can rely on Your grace to guide me. Help me let go of striving and fear and instead follow You with a joyful heart. Show me how to serve You, not out of obligation, but out of love. Holy Spirit, lead me each day, teaching me how to walk in this new way—not just by rules, but by relationship with You.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
