Around 1,300 attendees gathered for the ECO National Gathering, a significant event for the ECO: A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians, held from January 27-29, 2025, at the Highland Park Presbyterian Church in Dallas, Texas. This gathering provided a unique opportunity for fellowship, worship, and spiritual renewal among members of this theologically conservative denomination.
The theme for this year’s gathering was "Abide," inspired by the powerful words of Jesus in John 15:4-5, which remind believers of the importance of remaining connected to Him: “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.” This focus on abiding resonated deeply with participants, as they engaged in worship that emphasized rest, reflection, and the nurturing of their spiritual lives.
Rev. Beth Allin, the director of communications for ECO, shared insights on the gathering’s purpose. She noted that previous gatherings revealed a need for attendees to find respite for their souls. This year, the sessions were intentionally designed to foster a sense of peace and connection, allowing participants to explore themes of spiritual growth, community, and the challenges of ministry.
“Many of our leaders come from small or rural churches where they often feel isolated,” Allin explained. “This gathering serves as a reminder that they are loved by Jesus and are never alone in their ministry journeys.” The event not only provided a platform for worship but also facilitated connections among attendees, fostering relationships that extend beyond the gathering itself.
Participants were encouraged to engage with a variety of speakers, including practitioners and leaders from within and outside ECO, who shared valuable insights and experiences. The hope was that attendees would leave feeling encouraged and empowered to serve in their local communities, equipped with new friendships and renewed purpose.
The ECO National Gathering also serves as a reminder of the denomination’s roots. Formed in January 2012, ECO was established in response to the shifting theological landscape within the Presbyterian Church (USA), particularly following the approval of Amendment 10a, which allowed for the ordination of individuals in same-sex relationships. Today, ECO comprises approximately 450 member congregations, many of which transitioned from PCUSA to maintain their commitment to evangelical principles.
As the gathering concluded, Allin expressed her desire for attendees to strengthen their connections with God and each other, fostering a supportive community that lasts throughout the year. “Our name reflects our mission: we are a ‘Covenant Order’ of Evangelical Presbyterians,” she said. “We hope that everyone leaves feeling loved, encouraged, and ready to support one another in their ministries.”
The ECO National Gathering is more than just an event; it is a celebration of faith, community, and the shared mission of spreading the Gospel. As participants return to their congregations, they carry with them the joy and encouragement found in fellowship, reminding them that they are part of a larger family united in Christ.
