He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. — 1 John 4:8 KJV
Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. — 1 John 4:8 NIV
Reflection for Today's Verse
Godly love ought to be a mutually supportive bond between Christians, where each puts the needs of the other before their own. No matter the cost to ourselves, divine love requires that we behave in the best interests of others in light of eternity. This is because divine love is an action that springs from an attitude that strives to contemplate what is best for another – to the honor of God – as prompted by the Spirit of God.
God is the origin of all love, and this verse states that He loved us before we loved Him and sent His Son to atone for our sins.
And as members of His family, we are expected to love others as Christ loved us and to lay down our lives in selfless service for the good of others and for God’s glory.
My Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for loving the world so profoundly that You offered your only Son to atone for both my sin and the sin of the entire world. I ask that I may live a life that reflects Your love for others and that I may walk in both spirit and truth. Until I am a clear conduit through which Your divine love pours to others, to Your glory, I pray that You may increase and I may decrease in every aspect of my life. I ask in the name of Jesus, Amen.
